History of Show Choir! - The Musical

In early 2003, Mark McDaniels and Donald Garverick began collaborating on an original musical comedy which would explore the world of show choir (a.k.a. pop choir, swing choir, or glee club.) Having participated in their own high school show choirs as teenagers, the idea seemed an intriguing candidate for a great musical... the singing, the dancing, the sequined costumes... not to mention all of those jazz hands! After a few years of sitting in a local diner, quietly singing over coffee and writing in a notebook, they came up with what would become the book, music, and lyrics for Show Choir! - The Musical.

Following several private readings of the material for friends, they began working with the amazing director/ choreographer Gary Slavin who helped to focus and shape the script before presenting their first public staged reading in the fall of 2006 at Ripley-Grier Studios NYC. Mr. Slavin has since continued his work with this project us as director, choreographer, and dramaturg.

In the summer of 2007, Show Choir! - The Musical made its premiere at the New York International Fringe Festival where it not only played to sold out houses but was also recognized with two awards for Overall Excellence.

After the fantastic response from FringeNYC, Mr. McDaniels and Mr. Garverick continued making further revisions to the script and music of Show Choir! In November 2008, they presented this revision in another successful staged reading at the Kraine Theater in NYC. The exceptionally talented cast of twenty-one featured Tony nominee Stephanie D’Abruzzo (Ave Q/ B’way), Steve Luker (42nd Street /B'way), Neal Mayer (Les Mis/ B’way), Michelle Millerick (Side Show / B’way) and Mick Bonde. (Bat Boy)

Due to the continuous positive feedback and a rapidly growing on-line fanbase (over 30,000 fans on-line!!!) the creators spent the next year further developing the show and are now happy to announce that Show Choir! - The Musical has been selected to participate in the 2010 New York Musical Theatre Festival which takes place from September 27th-October 17th.
