The History of Show Choir! - The Musical

In early 2003, Mark McDaniels and Donald Garverick began collaborating on an original musical comedy which would explore the world of show choir (a.k.a. pop choir, swing choir, or glee club.) Having participated in their own high school show choirs as teenagers, the idea seemed an intriguing candidate for a great musical... the singing, the dancing, the sequined costumes... not to mention all of those jazz hands! After a few years of sitting in a local diner, quietly singing over coffee and writing in a notebook, they came up with what would become the book, music, and lyrics for Show Choir! - The Musical.

Following several private readings of the material for friends, they began working with the amazing director/ choreographer Gary Slavin who helped to focus and shape the script before presenting their first public staged reading in the fall of 2006 at Ripley-Grier Studios NYC. Mr. Slavin has since continued his work with this project as director, choreographer, and dramaturg.

In the summer of 2007, Show Choir! - The Musical made its premiere at the New York International Fringe Festival where it not only played to sold out houses but was also recognized with two awards for Overall Excellence.

Mr. McDaniels and Mr. Garverick continued to revise the script and music and in November 2008, they presented this revision in another successful staged reading at the Kraine Theater in NYC. The exceptionally talented cast of twenty-one featured Tony nominee Stephanie D’Abruzzo (Ave Q/ B’way), Steve Luker (42nd Street /B'way), Neal Mayer (Les Mis/ B’way), and Michelle Millerick (Side Show / B’way)

Due to the continuous positive feedback and a rapidly growing on-line fanbase (over 30,000 fans on-line!!!) the creators pressed on and were thrilled to learn that Show Choir! - The Musical had been selected to participate in the 2010 New York Musical Theatre Festival. The show was so successful that the entire run of the show quickly sold out and two extension performances were added to accomodate ticket demand.

In May of 2011, Mr. Garverick and Mr. McDaniels were recognized at the York Theatre's NEO (New/Emerging/Outstanding) Concert, a celebration of emerging musical theatre writers, where the song "Stage Fright" from Show Choir! - The Musical was performed.

Most recently, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland selected Show Choir to run in rep with Sunday in the Park with George and Wasted Love at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. The show quickly racked up multiple 4 & 5 star reviews (What's On Stage, BroadwayBaby.com, One4Review) and again played a sold out run.
